Sitting above the sandy beaches of North Carolina’s Outer Banks is a brick fort that was built with slave labor during the 1820′s and 1830′s. Fort Macon was originally part of the coastal defense system that lined the eastern seaboard and was strategically placed to defend the ports of Beaufort and Morehead City.
